In the rapidly evolving landscape of aquaculture, the incorporation of secondary compounds from botanical powders and extracts into aqua feed is garnering increasing attention. From the inclusion of rosemary and thyme to ginger and peppermint, these plant-based feed additives and feed materials not only offer versatile benefits but also hold the potential to reshape the aquaculture industry sustainably, significantly impacting the welfare of aquatic animals such as fish and shrimp.

This shift of aqua feeds towards botanical solutions extends beyond traditional nutritional considerations. The exploration of functional ingredients, derived from nature, addresses a spectrum of challenges faced by the aquaculture sector. From disease management to environmental impact and nutritional optimization, the feed industry is actively pursuing innovative solutions to navigate these complexities and foster sustainable growth.

Functional Ingredients Addressing Key Challenges:

  1. Rosemary and Lemon Balm: Natural Defense Against Infections

The effectiveness of rosmarinic acid-rich botanicals, like rosemary and lemon balm, in reducing mortality rates and combating infections caused by Streptococcus iniae highlights a promising shift towards disease prevention through plant extracts and powders. these These botanicals offer a natural alternative or supplement to antibiotic treatments and have demonstrated effectiveness against gram-negative bacteria in various fish species, including Nile tilapia, rainbow trout, common carp, and gilthead seabream.

  1. Peppermint: Enhancing Immunity and Barrier Function

Peppermint, with its menthol and bioactive compounds, emerges as a potent ally against Vibrio harveyi, showcasing improvements in immunological parameters. Moreover, it has shown to strengthen the natural mucus barrier in the skin of Caspian roach, contributing to enhanced resistance against bacteria and elevating overall animal welfare.

  1. Garlic: Allicin for Immunostimulation and Growth

Garlic, celebrated for its allicin content, has shown to be a botanical powerhouse for immunostimulation and growth in various fish species, including Nile tilapia, rainbow trout, Barramundi, grouper, and Pacific white shrimp. Enriched aqua feeds with garlic not only prevent infections by Aeromonas and Escherichia bacteria but also demonstrate efficacy in mitigating parasite infestation in Nile tilapia and rainbow trout.

  1. Thyme: Natural Allrounder in Aquaculture Challenges

Abundant in thymol and carvacrol, thyme emerges as a natural immunostimulant, promising to fortify resistance against pathogens and playing a pivotal role in the utilization of plant compounds in aquaculture.

  1. Fenugreek and Turmeric: Versatile Organ Supporters

Fenugreek, rich in proteins, and turmeric, abundant in curcumin, have showcased versatile functionalities in research studies, counteracting the detrimental effects of soy meal in aqua feeds. These botanical additions not only enhanced immune responses but also provided antibacterial activity, contributing to the resilience and adaptability of feed formulations.

  1. Antiparasitic Powerhouses from Botanical Origins

Garlic, rich in allicin, and ginger, rich in gingerol, act as botanical antiparasitic powerhouses, particularly against fluke parasites. Further, essential oils from clove and rosemary present promising results in managing infections, offering botanical solutions to address the major challenge of parasite infestation in aquaculture.

  1. Botanical Anesthetics and Botanical Microencapsulation: Innovations for the Future

Plant extracts, as well as plant powders, could serve as natural alternatives to chemical anesthetics in the future. They demonstrated the potential to de-escalate stress-inducing situations, such as noise or treatments requiring fish handling. Furthermore, the microencapsulation of botanical solutions ensures optimal conservation and controlled release of bioactive secondary plant compounds, paving the way for innovations in botanical aquafeed production.

Regulatory Landscape and Future Prospects

Despite the promising outcomes, the integration of these botanical derivatives into aquaculture faces regulatory challenges. Continued research is imperative to address concerns and foster industry-wide acceptance. The progressive inclusion of secondary plant compounds into aqua feeds marks a potential evolution towards sustainable practices in aquaculture, supported by empirical evidence and research-backed findings. The proactive efforts of the feed industry to address these challenges underscore a commitment to advancing the sustainability and efficacy of aquaculture practices.

From February 13 to 16, Biofach, the world’s leading trade fair for organic food, took place again in Nuremberg. A reason for some of our colleagues to make their way to Nuremberg, to have conversations and to look for new trends. Below are a few impressions and voices.

Michael Simmerlein, Senior Manager Strategic Project Management, was live on site at the booth of our Mate joint venture ESM from Brazil:

“My task was to present ESM and MartinBauer as a joint solution provider for raw materials, teas, beverages and other products around mate. We had many interesting discussions and there is definitely potential for our product range. It was noticeable that this year there were particularly many start-ups represented as exhibitors at the trade fair. There were also some suppliers with Mate in their product range.”

Sebastian Bumm, Sales Beverage Industry, used the trade fair to meet some of his (potential) customers in person and present our portfolio:

“For several years now, kombucha has been presented as a trendy drink at trade shows. So far, however, it has not quite caught on in the mainstream.” He was struck by the many small and medium-sized exhibitors with products made in-house. “These are self-made manufacturers who produce and bottle drinks in small quantities by hand. The equivalent of craft beer, so to speak.” The topic of sugar reduction continues to be important for the beverage and food industry. This is where Sebastian Bumm scored with our Botanical Sweetness concept.

Drinks of the future: What do they look like? What topics and trends are occupying the beverage industry? What is currently in vogue and where is the journey heading in the future?

Abenteuer Leben, the German show all about recipes, DIY and vacations on Kabel 1, investigated in these questions. And where better to track down the latest beverage trends than at drinktec, the world’s leading trade fair for the beverage and liquid food industry, which took place again in Munich in September 2022.

A major theme at the show was “botanicals” – it’s going natural! Regarding the “natural beverages” trend, the two reporters also found what they were looking for at our booth. Together with Christian Dinkler (Head of Sales) they tried one of our many beverage innovations: Herbal Cola. This product not only looks great, it also tastes great. So what else could it offer? It is a clean label, allergen-free, vegan product! The natural cola meets several consumer trends including being natural based and free from claims without compromising taste.

But what do the two reporters say about Herbal Cola? Click here for the short article (German version) – from second 00:48.

Just shortly before the holiday season, MartinBauer once again presented itself as an exhibitor at a another trade fair, the CHOCO TEC. And just fitting with Christmas being just around the corner, the focus was on confectionery.

At the small but very select trade fair, experts from the European chocolate industry met – an excellent opportunity to position ourselves accordingly with our botanical solutions and to further deepen existing contacts. With our motto “Indulge your business with botanicals” we formulated our promise to the industry as follows: Indulgent solutions, sophisticated innovations, and chocolaty applications – all with the pure power of botanicals.

Dr. Heiko Spitzbarth, Head of Product Development, has given a presentation on the benefits and applications of SuperFine for the chocolate industry. Four trade show samples have been formulated with our SuperFine powders, showing different application examples from the chocolate and coated nuts sector. The intense flavor and color giving properties come from our 100% vegetable SuperFine powders.

Are you interested in the diverse and value-adding use of botanicals in a wide variety of products in the confectionery industry? You also want to know what contribution botanicals make to making end products more natural and thus more attractive from the consumer’s point of view?

From September 12 – 16, 1,002 exhibitors from 55 countries and almost 50,000 visitors from 171 countries met in Munich at drinktec. After a break of more than two years due to COVID-19, MartinBauer was able to exhibit at a trade fair again with the message “Botanicals turned into business”.

For the first time MartinBauer presented itself with the new brand image, which elicited many positive reactions. Especially the new motto “Leading the botanical way” aroused curiosity among many visitors and has inspired further conversations.

“We already knew before the trade show that botanicals are on trend, but direct conversation offers an even more accurate picture,” said Christian Wenzel (Head of Sales Beverage Industry). “The feedback from customers on our presented solutions was consistently positive. We were able to show our innovations to our existing customers as well as to new interested parties. The most important thing is that the customers brought time with them and we had the chance to set new impulses.”

MartinBauer also contributed to one of the keyword highlights at drinktec, namely sustainability. Jan von Enden (Head of Group Sustainability – Supply Chain) spoke on the “Drinktec Innovation hub stage” on the topic of “From sustainability to shared value creation – building integrative supply chains”, which led to interesting and further discussions afterwards.

May 21 is a very special day for all tea lovers. The United Nations has declared it International Tea Day. We show the great variety with which teas, herbal and fruit teas enrich the diet with pleasure and bring joy into life every day with their wonderful colors.

What is tea?

Next to water, tea is the most popular beverage in the world. According to legend, tea originated in China and spread to Europe via Dutch colonies in the 1600s. The traditional tea plant Camellia sinensis is used to make the classic green and black teas, as well as white tea. In addition, and in many countries equal in consumption, however, there are numerous other plants from which wonderful infusions are obtained. When thinking of tea today, there are no limits to the different taste profiles: from refreshing to fruity or sweet, no consumer wish remains unfulfilled.

Tea – more versatile than any other beverage!

Tea is now consumed all over the world and has developed into a modern lifestyle drink – whether classically hot, cold brewed, as a “home-made” iced tea or as a trendy bubble tea. As an increasingly growing segment, cold brew tea has established itself on supermarket shelves in recent years to fill the gap between pure mineral water and pre-packaged iced teas. With its simple preparation method, this form of tea in a bag is also convincing on-the-go – and is therefore ideally suited for health-conscious, active consumers.

Tea and its many facets

Not least, the image of tea has changed. Consumers are paying increasingly more attention to how they can do good for themselves and their bodies – especially when it comes to nutrition. This and the renewed focus on the functional benefits of herbal ingredients are making tea more and more attractive – whether for strengthening the immune system, supporting digestion or providing an energy boost. The latter in particular is a popular “side effect”: the tein it contains stimulates the nervous system, causing fatigue to evaporate and concentration to improve.

Tea is a reason to celebrate

So raise the tea cups and glasses – let’s toast together to “International Tea Day” – because also in May we can only warmly recommend any kind of tea – even if it’s a cold brew!

For us at MartinBauer, tea in all its facets is part of our DNA. We have been dealing with herbal raw materials for tea applications for over 90 years. With our expert knowledge we are the ideal partner to find suitable solutions for you and your product. Let’s get in touch! sales@martin-bauer.com

Consumers embrace healthy eating: as consumers become more intensely concerned with nutrition, they are also considering the impact food has on their physical and mental health, as well as on the health of the planet. They are putting particular emphasis on the quality of ingredients, and sweetener type is a key marker to evaluate product quality. So, the demand is growing for products that provide a balanced diet while being tasty, contain no E-numbers and are also sustainable.

The pressure on the food industry is growing, but is there a real sweet alternative without any lazy compromise? We at MartinBauer took this demand very seriously and came across with our revolutionary natural Botanical Sweet Mixes.

Botanicals and their various taste profiles

Botanicals range across the various flavors: from herbal with e.g. basil, rosemary, mate, to refreshing with lemongrass, peppermint or lemon balm or more fruity with hibiscus, elderberry and rosehip and of course sweet with stevia, sweet blackberry leaves and licorice root.

These taste profiles can only be realized by special selected combinations of botanicals – there is no need of flavors or other additives! We at MartinBauer have been dealing for more than 90 years with these herbal raw materials for tea applications, we know how to handle and process botanicals and know our cup of tea in every single dimension of taste. That’s why the mix of sweet tasting botanicals comes naturally to us.

Our Solution: A sweet tea blend

As mentioned, the inspiration for this concept lies in our history of creating different botanical taste profiles for tea applications. But how does this apply to your products? It’s just like when you treat yourself with a cup of tea: a dried botanical blend, mainly in a tea bag, is extracted with hot water to get the sensory and health benefits from the single botanicals.

Our solution works the same way: for all botanical sweeteners we are using the full plant or parts of it and are not purifying single components. Our extracts are pure water-based extracts without further physical or chemical treatment: you just add a cup of sweet botanical mixes to your product.

Your benefits: Enhance the taste and sweetness of your product in a simple and natural way

Our solution is based on natural botanical products which have a positive and direct effect on the nutri-score value of your product. And with our vegan, clean label and sustainable botanical extracts and infusions you meet the demands of your consumers. In a nutshell you benefit from a simple and natural way to enhance the taste and the sweetness of your product and at the same time you fulfil all regulatory aspects.

So, whatever your application is – condiments, cereal bars, little shots, energy drinks or carbonated soft drinks – if you are facing the challenge to get sweetness and taste right while fulfilling all the regulatory aspects, our Botanical Sweet Mixes are the right solution for you. We at MartinBauer can help you develop your individual solution for your application. Are you interested? Contact us: sales@martin-bauer.com

100 women in the Al-Fath region of Egypt are gaining financial independence by confidently exerting their entrepreneurial spirit.

Nasamat El Qusy radiates enthusiasm when she speaks about the women who are participating in our empowerment program in the rural municipality of Arab El-Kalabat, around 400 kilometers south of Cairo. Here and in other places around the country we are working with our Egyptian raw materials partner Ottoman to improve quality of life for the people who cultivate our plant ingredients.

El Qusy works with our partner organization ACDA and is thrilled by her experience of how the program has changed the lives of the women involved. In rural areas like Arab El-Kalabat, it is difficult for women to earn money. But the training sessions and opportunities for mutual exchange that our program provides gave them the decisive impetus to believe in themselves and assert their abilities. Fifteen women took part in the first phase of the program in 2020, launching their own projects to help them achieve greater financial independence.

Situation for women and girls in Egypt

This is a major step. In Arab El-Kalabat, girls are less likely than boys to receive an education. Here, women are responsible for housework, child care, and looking after the health of everyone in their household. Because few women have jobs and their social status is lower, with their lives revolving around the home, most women have little contact with the outside world. As a result, women and girls are more at risk of poverty and hunger.

Women make a valuable contribution to family income

Saffa Has’san Gom’aa beams when she talks about her participation in the project: “It was a good feeling to be in a group of women, learning something together. The workshops gave us lots of ideas and were so much fun. We exchanged our stories and laughed together. Our trainer Mohamed Youssef convinced me that women are perfectly capable of running their own business and improving their family income. That gave me the confidence to discuss my long-held desire with my husband, and I now have his support in realizing my dream.”

Empowering women has positive long-term effects

We have been working in the project region since 2019, with the help of non-governmental organization ACDA, which has valuable insider knowledge of the country and its people. The opportunities we offer in this village arose out of the ideas of the women and men who live here. This allows our projects to target areas where change is most urgently needed – and thus have the best-possible impact.

The first phase of the project was primarily dedicated to the topic of health, but the next phase will focus on improving the situation of women, in cooperation with our customer Traditional Medicinals. Experience has shown that this approach has the most lasting impact on living conditions – not only for women.

Who else benefits from women’s empowerment?

Like almost everywhere in the world, women in Egypt are the heart of the family. They bear most of the burdens and responsibilities, yet rarely get to make decisions. When pioneering women like Saffa Has’san Gom’aa are able to contribute to the family income, they gain self-confidence and start playing an active role in household decision-making. The additional income is usually invested in business growth, the children’s education, or healthcare for the whole family.

With their social advancement, women provide an inspiring example to their children, motivating them to stay in school and develop their talents and skills, and thus have better chances of a good income later in life. And the program doesn’t only benefit individual families: the sense of togetherness it generates has a favorable impact on village life, too. Women are therefore not only important agents for positive change in their own lives, but in their entire community.
