Moringa is a long-known botanical superhero: the so-called miracle tree Moringa oleifera is also known as horseradish tree or drumstick tree and was already widely used in ancient times for its nutritious and healthy properties.
About Moringa
The plant Moringa oleifera LAM. originally comes from the Himalayan region in northwestern India and is also sourced from West African countries, Southeast Asia and some Arab countries. The plant thrives even under difficult environmental conditions. Moringa grows best in a subtropical or tropical climate on sandy, poor soils. In an average year, a moringa tree can grow 3-4 meters. The leaves can be harvested from established moringa trees up to nine times a year. The leaves must be dried and ground into a powder before moringa can be used. The smell and taste of these plants is typically tart and spicy, such as turnip cabbage or radish.
Moringa – a botanical superhero for everyone
Moringa has various benefits for consumers as well as cultivators. It is a livelihood for most small farmer in the cultivating countries. Moringa contains active substances such as glucosinolates (mustard oils), a substance to protect the plant from predators. They are also said to help the body with diseases of the upper respiratory tract or with joint pain. The leaves of the moringa tree also already cover a large part of the daily mineral and protein needs: 10g moringa contain 2.5 grams of protein. In addition to that, the plant contains 6 out of 7 essential minerals. Moringa leaves and seeds are used in many countries as a nutrient-rich vegetable, salad or seasoning. The leaves in particular contain numerous minerals, trace elements, vitamins and proteins, as well as secondary plant compounds, enzymes and oils. Consumers already acquired a taste for it: the number of new soft drink launches with moringa has doubled since 2018. In addition to that, over one third of consumers associate moringa with today’s highly popular functionalities such as immunity, energy or relaxation.
